Additional Information
• One MHS student was awarded a National Merit Scholarship.
• The Academic Decathlon Team finished 9th in the State Competition. This is the 3rd consecutive year that Montgomery has finished in the Top10 at State.
• One MHS student placed 1st in Computer Science and one MHS student placed 2nd in Informative Speaking at the UIL Academic District Competition.
• The UIL Academic Team placed 1st overall with one student placing lst in Number Sense, one student placing 2nd in Persuasive Speaking, one student placing 2nd in Ready Writing, one student placing 1st and another placing 2nd in Social Studies, and one student placing 1st in Spelling/Vocabulary.
• The MHS Debate Team competed at the Texas Forensics Association Qualifying Tournament and one student earned the opportunity to represent MHS at the TFA State Competition for Original Oratory.
• The MHS Debate Team advanced to the National Competition.
• One MHS Debate Team member placed 1st in the Original Oratory at the East National Forensics League District Competition.
• The MHS Theatre Department swept the Zone A Competition and advanced to the District, Area and Regional Level of the UIL One Act Play Competition.
• One MHS thespian was named Best Actress; two were named to the All-Star Cast; two received Honorable Mention; one was named Best Technician.
• The MHS Theater’s One Act Play advanced to the State Competition for the 2nd year in a row; one student won Best Actor; two students were named to the All-Star Cast; one student won Best Tech for the 4th time.
• The MHS Choir Department advanced 39 vocalists to the Texas All-State Choir Regional level.
• The MHS Choir competed at the UIL Region 9 Solo and Ensemble Contest; 98 students earned First Division medals; 31 students qualified for the State Competition in Austin.
• The MHS Choir earned 100 medals at the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest; 46 earned First Division ratings.
• Thirty MHS Choir students earned Division One ratings qualifying them for the UIL State Competition.
• The MHS Choir’s Madrigal Women and Madrigal Singers earned First Divisions at the Madrigal Chamber Choir Competition and placed 1st among the competing choirs.
• The MHS Choir earned 4 UIL Sweepstakes Awards at the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest.
• The Varsity Chorale, the Varsity Chorale Women, the Varsity Men and the Non-Varsity Concert Treble Choir earned straight First Division ratings at the UIL Contest.
• MHS Band Director, Glen Oliver, was awarded the title, “Director Emeritus” in appreciation for his 25 year musical legacy in the Irving Independent School District.
• The MHS Bear Band received a perfect straight “One” rating at the UIL Marching Contest.
• The Texas Music Educators Association Convention inducted Mr. Glen Oliver, MHS Band Director, into the International Fraternity, Phi Beta Mu.
• The MHS Band earned 50 First Division medals and qualified thirty band members for the State Solo and Ensemble Competition at the Region IX UIL Solo and Ensemble Competition.
• The MHS Band earned straight “Ones” at the Region IX UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest.
• The MHS Cheerleaders won 1st place at the Cheer Power Regional Competition.
• The Bruin Yearbook Staff won the Award of Achievement for last year’s book, placing the yearbook in the Top 50% of publications statewide.
• The Edge Newspaper Staff places 1st at the American Scholastic Press Association’s Annual Review and Contest Awards for newspapers and other publications.
• One MHS student received a District FFA officer’s position.
• The Girls Cross Country Team finishes 2nd at the State Meet; Girls Cross Country Team won the Regional and District Championship; three Lady Bears were named to the All-Region Team of 15 runners by the Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas.
• The MHS Bear Football Team had eight players named to the 2006 18-AAAA All-District Team – one Offensive MVP, one Offensive Newcomer of the Year, two First Team Offense, and six First Team Defense.
• Five Bear football players were named to the Academic All-District Football Team.
• One Bear football player was named to the First Team Academic All-State; two were named to the 2nd Team; three received Honorable Mention.
• One Bear football player was named 2nd Team All-State Tight End by the Texas Sports Writers Association.
• The MHS Football Team won the Bi-District Championship.
• The MHS Team Tennis won the bronze medal at State.
• The Lady Bears Varsity Volleyball Team were Bi-District Champions, Area Champions and Regional Quarterfinalists with a 26 win/8 loss season record.
• Ten Lady Bear Volleyball Team members made the Academic All-District Team; three earned First Team All-District honors; two made Second-Team All-District.
• The Lady Bear Soccer Team won Bi-District and advanced to the Area Playoffs. One Lady Bear received the All-District Co-Offensive MVP, four were named to the All-District First Team, three to the Second Team, and four received Honorable Mention.
• Two MHS Soccer Team members made the 1st Team All-District and two were named to the Second Team.
• At the Texas High School Powerlifting Associations Regional Tournament, the Montgomery Powerlifters competed and one student placed 2nd while two qualified for the State Competition.
• One Lady Bear Powerlifter set personal and school record at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Championship.
• One Bear Powerlifter won the Texas State Championship in 181 lb. Weight Class and broke a 16 year old State record with his bench press of over 400 lbs.
• Two MHS Bear Divers qualified for All-American consideration at the Region V Diving Championship by finishing 1st and 3rd.
• One Bear Diver won his 4th consecutive State Championship and broke the 4A and 5A record. The 5A record was the oldest standing record in UIL Swimming and Diving.
• One Lady Bear Swimmer placed 4th in the 200 Free and 1st in the 100 Free at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Meet. This young lady is the first swimming State Champ for MHS.
• Another Lady Bear swimmer broke 2 school records at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Meet.
• Girls’ Swimming and Diving Team finished 6th at State.
• Boys’ Swimming and Diving Team finished 9th at State.
• Swimming and Diving Team coach, Bob Lieber, was named State Diving Coach of the Year.
• The Lady Bear Purple Golf Team won the District 18-4A Tournament. This was their 17th consecutive District win. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medalists were all Lady Bear golfers.
• Two Lady Bear Golfers were named to the First Team All-District and three were named to the Second Team All-District.
• The Lady Bear Purple Golf Team won the Regional III Golf Tournament and the Lady Bear Gold Team placed 2nd. Three Lady Bear golfers were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Medalists and two were named First Team All-Region.
• The Lady Bear Purple Golf Team won the State Title for the 7th consecutive year. One Lady Bear won the State Individual Title, an accomplishment no other Montgomery Golfer has ever achieved. She was also named First Team All-State.
• Three Lady Bear Golfers were named to the Second Team All-State.
• The Lady Bear Gold Golf Team placed 5th at the State Tournament.
• The MHS Boys’ Varsity Golf Team finished 2nd at District 18-4A Tournament, won the Region III-4A Tournament, and finished 7th at the State 4A Tournament.
• One Bear Golfer was selected as All-State Honorable Mention.
• In Tennis, a MHS Mixed Doubles Team won the District Championship.
• The MHS Varsity Tennis Team advanced eleven players to the Regional Semi-Finals. The MHS Varsity Team earned 13 of the 16 Regional spots - a new record.
• Two tennis players advanced to the State Meet as Regional Champions in Boys’ Doubles.
• Eleven MHS Track and Field Team members advanced to the Region III Track Meet from the District 18-4A Championships.
• The Lady Bear Track and Field Team finished 2nd at the District 18-4A Meet with two Lady Bear tracksters finishing lst and 2nd in the 400 Meter Dash. One Lady Bear won the Long Jump, the 800 Meter Run and placed 2nd in the High Jump. Two Lady Bear placed in the Triple Jump and the Lady Bear 1600 Meter Relay Team placed 1st.
• The Lady Bears Track Team won the Regional Championship with one Lady Bear winning the 800 Meter Dash, the 400 Meter Dash and finished 2nd in the High Jump and 4th in the Long Jump. Another Lady Bear placed 3rd in the 3200 Meter Run and 2nd in the 1600 Meter Run, while yet another Lady Bear won the 300 Meter Hurdles.
• At the Texas State Track and Field Championships, one Lady Bear placed 2nd in the 800 Meter Run, 3rd in the 400 Meter Run and 3rd in the High Jump.
• The Lady Bear Track Team finished 6th at the Texas State Track and Field Championships.
• The MHS Bear Baseball Team won the District 18-4A Championship and were the Class 4A Region III Finalists with a record of 29 wins and 7 losses.
• The Bear Baseball Team finished the regular season ranked #3 in State and #1 in the Greater Houston Area Baseball Poll.
• One Bear Baseball player was selected 1st Team All-State. Six players were selected 1st Team All-District with one of them earning the MVP title. Two players were selected 2nd Team All-District.
• MHS Bear Baseball Coach, Clint Heard, was named Coach of the Year for District 18-4A and was also named the Montgomery County Coach of the Year.
• The MHS Lady Bear Softball Team ended their season after advancing to the State Playoffs with one Lady Bear receiving Offensive Player of the Year and one player receiving Pitcher of the Year in District 18-4A. One Lady Bear receives First Team Infield and two make First Team Outfield. One is honored as 2nd Team Catcher and another received Honorable Mention in District 18-4A.
• Five Lady Bear Softball Players received Academic All-District Honors.
• Montgomery High School in total won 6 Regional Championships, set 5 State Records and finished in 6th place for the prestigious UIL “Texas Lone Star Cup.” This award is given annually to the 4-A high school that earns the most points for advancing beyond district-level in both academic and athletic competitions.
