ENGLISH IV POLICIES
MRS. D. MARTIN

As an English IV student, I have high expectations for you. These expectations include that you
1. Complete all assignments on time (NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS ACCEPTED)
2. Come prepared for class every day—bringing all necessary supplies and completing all readings
3. Participate actively and maturely in class discussions/activities
4. Listen respectfully to me and others’ discussions
5. Conduct yourself in a manner befitting an adult (no discipline issues!)
6. Perform college-level work

You should follow the student handbook regarding rules in this class, but some noted pet peeves of mine:
1. Cell phones (they will be collected)
2. Cheating/plagiarizing (you will suffer consequences)
3. Make-up Work: You are responsible for getting your assignments. The teacher will not remind you. When you have been assigned something ahead of time, you should make every attempt to be in class, but if you are absent because of illness, your work is due the day you return to class. Of course, anything assigned while you are absent will be not be due until after you get the assignment upon return. Follow handbook policy for test make-up.
4. With regard to #3, frequent absences on the date something is due! (I’m on to you! And your future college professors don’t care why you are absent.)
5. Whining (I truly have your best interests at heart and want you to succeed.)
6. Food and/or drink in class (I will follow this rule as well.)
7. Late work (There isn’t any! I don’t accept it!)

What you can expect from me:
1. I will be prepared for class every day.
2. I will be organized and give you advance notice of assignments.
3. I will grade your work in a timely manner.
4. I will communicate clearly with you about your progress in this class.
5. I will be as accessible as possible for questions and tutoring.
6. I will be fair and consistent and treat each student with the same respect with which I expect to be treated.

Materials to bring to class:
Textbook
English binder with Paper to write on
Blue/black pen

Grading:
80% = Major Grades (tests, timed writings, essays, sum of 6 wks. Daily grades,
presentations, etc.
Research Paper will involve several major grades
20% = Daily Grades (homework, class activities, quizzes, vocabulary definitions)
*Note: Written assignments that show true initial effort may be redone until student and
teacher are satisfied with the grade. This offer does not apply to unprepared students.

Restroom/Hall Passes:

You may ask for a hall pass four times during the semester—once every six weeks and once to be used any time. If you do not use the hall passes, they are good for extra credit at the end of the semester. You will also receive three homework passes for the semester, which can buy you one extra day on any assignment. These passes can also be redeemed for extra credit if not used by the end of the semester.
