COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to develop basic skills in Spanish for listening, speaking, reading and writing. In support of these skills, vocabulary development is heavily emphasized. In addition, students will be presented with grammatical structures and verb patterns for the present tense, commands, and basic past tense. Topics of a cultural, political, historical, literary, the arts, and geographical nature will also be studied.
It is imperative that students strive to maintain averages of 80 or above to lay an adequate foundation for all future Spanish learning. Students with final averages below an 80 in Spanish I should expect to spend additional time outside of class on remedial work to bring them up to the level of competence expected for Spanish II.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To set a solid foundation for our students’ competence in the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish
To provide student with a positive environment to practice these basic skills
To reinforce our students’ knowledge on the geography of the Hispanic world
To enhance our students’ awareness of political, literary, artistic, historical, and cultural contributions from the Hispanic world
To reinforce the benefits of learning another language and exposure to another culture
To address all the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) at the novice level to maximize learning
