Why French?

Salut, les parents!

Did you know that…

… 30 to 40% of English comes from French?

… students successful in French programs perform significantly higher on SAT, ACT, and other standardized test scores?

… the second universal language in the world is French? French and English are the two languages of the internet, the Olympics, the World Court, the UN, and the International Red Cross.

… most, if not all, developed and developing countries require students to master AT LEAST one foreign language?

… many businesses solicit and train employees from other countries in order to avail themselves of the latter’s bilingual skills?

I welcome your child (back?!)to the study of the beautiful French language! I look forward to helping your student learn to understand, speak, read, and write French and, in so doing, learn about other cultures and ways of life. In addition to the above advantages, he/she will learn to think and communicate more clearly in English, no small thing if we are to believe the feedback from the business community.

In class we will address all four language skills on a continuing basis. We will listen to tapes and videos, sing, and play games. We will speak French in class. We will read and we will write short essays and compositions.

Please encourage you student to practice EACH DAY what we have learned in class. Foreign languages, like math, require regular practice for mastery. If possible, arrange for your child to watch French or Canadian TV. Several computer programs are now available, as well as various web sites on the net. Any and all practice is valuable.

Thank you for the gift of your child in my room. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me either at (936) 597-6401 or at jlovell@misd.org
