Montgomery H.S. Golf History
1985-2010
The first State Championship in the history of Montgomery High School was won in the spring of 1996 by the Bear Golf Team. This team was the last to participate in Class AAA UIL competition. Team members were Wes Forester, Eric Walton, Doug DeGeorge, David Harris and Derek Lamely.
The 2001 Lady Bear Golf Team won the first ever State Championship for a Montgomery High School Lady Bear Team. Those team members were Mallorie Underwood, Lauren Dodge, Lauren Barbir, Paige Burrer and Sherry Summers. Their sudden death victory over Andrews High School would be the beginning of a run of CHAMPIONSHIPS that would break the UIL Record for most consecutives titles won in a row in Class 4A set by the Andrews teams from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The 2008-2009 Lady Bear Golf Team returned to the Throne Room of the UIL Class AAAA State Golf Championships with a 27 stroke victory. Allison LaRoche made first team all state. Karisma Smith was second team all state and Abby Corson finished all state honorable mention. Also playing well for the team was Marissa Bransburg and Betsy Eargle.
The Bear Varsity Team finsished the 2008-2009 seaon with a District 18 AAAA and Region III Championship. The Bears finished 4th at the State AAAA tournament. Senior team captain, Kelsey Eargle earned all state honorable mention. Others playing well for the Bears were Marshall Smith, Will Young, Logan Thomason, and Matt Hance.
Our season theme was Success: Peace of Mind which is a Direct Result of self satisfaction in knowing you did YOUR BEST to become the best you were capable of becoming.
Each and every Bear and Lady Bear gave THEIR BEST to continue the TRADITION of EXCELLENCE set by all of the teams from the past. CHERISH the MEMORIES that came with our 08-09 year.
WOW!!! A decade of golf has surely passed quickly. With the conclusion of the UIL Class AAAA State Championship history again has been made as our Lady Bear Purple Team defended their 2009 State Team Championship. Senior and Team Co-captain, Marissa Bransburg finished her stellar career with a 3rd medalist and 1st Team All State tournament. Also earning All-State 2nd team honors were Betsy Eargle, senior Team Co-captain, and junior Abby Corson. Katy Kile finshed as All State Honorable Mention. Abbey Bradley, a sophomore, was our other player playing at state on the Purple Team. Our Gold Team finsihed in 5th place. Cassie Joyce, a senior, was instrumental in helping this team reach state. Other Lady Bear Gold Team members were Molly Jones, Madison Liston, Kirby Sullivan and Laura Lindsey. Great Season Lady Bears!
Our Bear Purple Team had an amazing season finishing as District 18-4A Champs, Region III Runner UP, and 3rd Place at the 2010 UIL Class 4A State Golf Championships. This is the first team to medal in class AAAA since Montgomery moved into class AAAA in 1997. Grant Schroeder, a junior, led the Bears with an All-State 2nd Team finish. Senior team co-captains, Marshall Smith and Will Young, ended their outstanding careers in fine fashion. Logan Thomason and Ryan Beatty were our other team members playing at State.
